FT.com (subscription only) and WebProNews report that Google Renames Gmail In U K.
It is reported that Independent International Investment Research, a
UK-based financial research company, owns the trademark G-mail in
around 80 countries. Google has already been forced to rename Gmail in
Germany as another company owned the Gmail trademark there. Google has
said that existing email accounts with a gmail.com account will
continue to work. New accounts will come with googlemail.com as the address.
UPDATE: Google's statement to the press appears to be slightly different to what you see when you log into your gmail/googlemail account which says:
4 What if I'm a UK user who already has a Gmail address? Will that address ever change?
Unfortunately, we don't know. We would love to say that your address will always remain the same. But the trademark issue is still unsettled, and unfortunately, we cannot predict what the other party or the courts might do here. You can always use your same username with an @googlemail.com address to avoid this issue later on. But trust that we will do the best we can to make sure your email address won't ever have to change.
5 What if I'm a UK user who already has a Gmail address? Will I also need to change that address?
No, this change doesn’t affect existing Gmail addresses. For now, our plan is only to issue @googlemail.com addresses to new users. Trust that we will do the best we can to offer all our users a reliable and consistent email experience.

It's been yonks since my last ace post. I've been watching telly and gardening in my wellies. Now I'm taking a break for a sarnie and some crisps. I hope it's all tickety-boo with you but I've got to fly. Need some lolly from the whole-in-the-wall so I don't have to queue on the tube. It's my shout down the pub tonight so I might grab a takeaway and a beer from the off-licence on my way home for a kip.
If you think I'm barmy don't get stroppy but take a look at BA's Brit-speak Dictionary. It's the bees knees.
But seriously one thing that small and medium size businesses need to think about is how they communicate. Big corporations might be locked into a cycle of corporate bull***t but us small businesses should stick together and remember to talk to each other without using too much jargon.
Bullfighter is free software that you can download and use with Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. It will tell you just how full of bull***t your document or presentation really is. What are you waiting for?

Freelance journalist Dennis Howlett has started AccMan Pro, a blog that "discusses innovation and change among professional accountants". It's only been going a month but has already clocked up some pretty impressive statistics:

The inaugral podcast of personal productivity blog 43 Folders is all about a better way of thinking about your to-do list - just think about what they'll mean to you when they are done! I've been using OfficeTalk to manage my to-do list since I used one of the very first versions in about 1996. It is synced with my Palm Tungsten T5 running Agendus.

I thought the blog site would be a good forum to keep existing OfficeTalk customers up to date with OfficeTalk developments taking place at Softalk. It would be fair to say that OfficeTalk has suffered from a few years of neglect, but now that we're back in control of the product direction, we're hoping to reverse that trend and breath new life into it over the next few months and years.
Our plan is to release two new versions over the next few months. The first one, version 4.5 is planned for the end of November. The next version, 4.6, is planned for the first half of 2006.
Version 4.5 will fix a few of the more irritating bugs (particularly surrounding email) that customers have reported and will also give OfficeTalk a much needed facelift. The facelift is a result of a study performed on new potential customers, whose first impression of the product was that it looked dated and as a result made them lose confidence in it. Some screen shots of what the new version looks like are shown below.

We've swapped the old top mode bar for the newer more familiar Office XP/Outlook shortcut bar, such that mode specific toolbars now default to the top of the screen. This toolbar can be dragged to wherever you like. It can even float. The blue theme and other colors are optional and you can change them in the profile. Let us know what you think. Feedback to this blog. We've nearly completed the facelift and we're about to tackle email related bugs, where OfficeTalk sometimes struggles to decode certain messages and in other cases crashes. If you've got some really annoying bugs that you really want to see fixed in 4.5, feedback the details to this blog and we'll see what we can do.
Version 4.6 will address many more of the issues that you have reported in your feedback to us.
We've also been busy training our support staff to handle OfficeTalk support. We're nearly there and hope to be able to offer support contracts very soon. We'll let you know as soon as we're ready.

Veteran IT journalist David Tebbutt (one of the orginal editors of PCW - Personal Computer World) has written a thought provoking article for the European Business Forum (free registration required) in which he asks "Is Europe losing its innovative edge?". David's argument is that although Europeans can innovate they can't commercialize. The article lists the top ten issues that need to be addressed if Europe is to address this problem:
It's worth the free registration to read the full article.

Hi, I'm Wayne Jones and I'm Softalk's global sales manager. Just wanted to let you know that our new Softalk Collaboration Suite is now available. It brings together three of our products to provide a complete messaging and collaboration solution for small and medium size businesses. It's been designed and built specifically for that market and isn't simply a restricted version of an enterprise system. Most businesses should be able to get the system up and running in less than hour, and if you do have difficulty then simply email our tech support department. They are friendly and eager to help, no really they are!
You can read the full launch news release or why not just download it and try the 30 day free trial for yourself. Oh, and don't forget to let us know what you think by emailing feedback@softalkltd.com . I look forward to hearing from you soon!

Leading from the front is the first post by Brad Smith on the Official Quickbooks blog. It will be interesting to see how this one develops as it is aimed at a similar audience of small and medium size businesses that we are talking (and listening) to on the Softalk Let's talk business blog. Definitely one to subscribe to and add to the blog roll.
